I’m quite choosy when it comes to watching theatrical shows. During elementary and high school, we were trained to perform plays of varied adaptations to a huge number of crowd as if I have enrolled for acting classes and not for academics. With this, I know how hard and costly it is to produce a show.
For
big productions of cultural theatrical shows (water-based stage), the
House of Dancing Water in Macau will be my second after the world’s
largest stage production, Siam Niramit of
Bangkok, Thailand.
In
partnership with the Franco Dragone Entertainment Company through a
recommendation of a friend and drinking buddy, we were invited to experience
this once in a lifetime water extravaganza at premium seats.
The
world-class show is housed at the City of Dreams Macau in a purpose-built
theater designed with many breakthroughs including a stage pool that holds a
record-breaking 3.7 million gallons of water(equivalent to 5 olympic-sized
swimming pools). Before we went to Macau,
I was curious of how extravagant this show is, and so I made the research and
was particularly amazed of the stunts.
What more if I witnessed it personally and up close?
The
show starts at 8 in the evening. Hours
before, we had our dinner at Belcancao Four Seasons Hotel. It has been an unplanned itinerary that
before we watch theatrical shows, we are treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner,
ending up full and sleepy heads. Fortunately,
the shows can awaken our senses with delight.
It appears like a déjà vu but obviously of a different country. The last time the group watched a theatrical
show together was at Resorts World Manila for Bituing Walang Ningning and dinner was served at Marriott Manila
where we stayed for a weekend.
THE TICKETING OFFICE |
THE CITY OF DREAMS |
The
theater’s capacity is approximately 2,000 seats and I could say we have the
best seats, being at the center and close to the stage, but not too close
otherwise, we will be required to wear raincoats.
The
show started on time. It runs for almost
one and a half hour of continuous acrobatic elements and original acts. I was amazed of how the stage transforms into
different sets, land and literally water-based.
Gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, divers, actors and motorcyclists are
featured in the breath-taking show.
THE HOUSE OF DANCING WATER THEATER |
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN |
After all the stunts (with no harness), we begin to ponder on the plot. There appears to be a princess rescued by his prince from the antagonists and they live happily ever after. The love story may appear simple, yet the execution is not.
So
what then is the storyline? It goes like this…
The story begins in the coast of Coloane where
a fisherman traveling with his boat enjoys his journey. Suddenly, a mysterious energy from the water
creates a terrible whirlpool, grabs the fisherman and pulls him to a place and
a time of legend. He does not realize
for a while what is happening at that moment. He observes, lost and intrigues,
when a storm brings a survivor from a shipwreck, a stranger to this magical
kingdom. The young, brave stranger
encounters and falls in love with a beautiful princess who was thrown into a
cage by her evil stepmother, the Dark Queen.
Without hesitating, the fisherman decides to help the stranger fight
against the Dark Queen and rescue the Princess.
With his help, the Stranger and the Princess defeat the Dark Queen, and
the fisherman obtains an unexpected reward.
They
have acts never been seen before on theaters and can be said as a setting for a
journey through time as well, with backdrops comparing the traditional and
modern landscapes.
I
may sound like doing some book reviews for a high school project, but really,
it is worth watching especially when visiting Macau with family and you’re not
into casinos. My family haven’t watched
this spectacular show and I hope when we get back to Macau, they find time to
experience the same.
This
is truly highly recommended.

Wow! This seems truly amazing! The only show I've seen so far that resembles this in a minuscule way ( though I truly enjoyed it the first time I watched the show) was the Water World at Universal Studio in Singapore. Tho it was action packed, I doubt that it was comparable to this. I cant wait to experience this show if given the chance!
