MABILONG LUBUAGAN WEAVERS VILLAGE
While
other new graduates scout at business districts and attend interviews, this
lady from Lubuagan, Kalinga makes the
distinct and colorful set of threads interlaced to form fabrics as her pastime.
She is Jeslyn Lumacdag, Bachelor of English fresh graduate and a young weaver
in the village of Mabilong, town of Lubuagan Kalinga Province.
THE YOUNG WEAVER AT WORK |
It
takes passion and meticulous hands to enhance this skill of weaving. Upon arrival at Lubuagan, we climbed a few concrete steps to roam around the
village of Mabilong and entered one
of the houses where a young weaver puts her passion into work.
THE CONCRETE PATH TO THE VILLAGE |
The
midday sun was unforgiving. Taking
refuge at one of the stilt houses made of wood and drinking soda bought on a nearby sari-sari store, predicaments of intense heat vanished. The fresh air that abounds the home of the
young weaver while witnessing her finish a design was comforting. Her mother stood near the doorstep next to me
taking pride in the works of her daughter.
THE STILT HOUSE OF THE WEAVER |
The
Mabilong Weaver’s Village is situated along the road and is said to be
Kalinga’s center of the ethnic weaving industry. No ethnic design is similar. Souvenirs can be bought direct from the weavers. If only I had enough cash, I should have
bought one as a souvenir.
Ms.
Lumacdag is just one of the village weavers.
Their designs are well-thought of and truly world-class. Women in the highlands I suppose are expected
to be skilled weavers. This is one
industry in Kalinga province that should be given support and attention as
well. Any house in Mabilong harbors a weaver with materials safely kept like jewelries
and land titles in the lowlands.
LUBUAGAN VILLAGE HOUSES |
THE SIMPLE RURAL LIFE |
Ma-K Homestay situated along the national
road guided us on this visit. In one corner
is a souvenir shop where fabrics are made by their commissioned weavers in the
village. Homestays are the best way to
experience the province since there are no hotels. We could have stayed
overnight at the said homestay, however, we need to fulfill our corporate
duties and be back in Manila the day after.

She makes such beautiful patterns. I hope that weavers like her and other weavers in the area would get a support from the local government. This culture must stay alive for the future generations.
ReplyDeleteTalent, creativity, and passion at its best! We tried weaving when we went to Puerto Princesa; oh boy, it takes a lot of skill and accuracy. Salute to these weavers!
