2013 BITUON HAN LEYTE KASADYAAN

When in Tacloban City, Leyte for the June festivities, one can never miss the Remedios Trinidad Romualdez (RTR) Plaza.  All cultural and social activities in honor of Sr. Sto Nino are held at this imposing stage right at the center of the city.  With this, the name is automatically converted as the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival Park.

While planning for a meet-up with fellow Pinoy Travel Bloggers, Eric of Byahilo.com suggested that there is a Bituon han Leyte scheduled at the Pintados Kasadyaan Festival Park on 28 June 2013.  Honestly, for someone who was raised from Tacloban City but unaware of the festivities, I immediately asked my childhood friends what this is all about.  Uninterested of the festival activities as they were only up for drinking sprees, reunions and short get togethers, I wasn't able to obtain a definite answer for my query.  Thus, for my own curiosity to be fed, I have to attend the said event.

Bituon Han Leyte- Pasaka Festival, Tanauan, Leyte

Bituon Han Leyte --- when literally translated to Waray dialect means a star of Leyte.  Thus, I was expecting that this shall be a singing or a dancing competition or a showcase of talents.

Before the show started, the rain fell so hard and with the reign of Typhoon Gorio, I was about to back out from attending the said event but since I've committed to meet my fellow Pinoy Travel Bloggers for my first meet-up, I have to proceed.  Nevertheless, it was the right decision that I attended the said event and had the opportunity to meet some of the best travel bloggers of the Pinoy Travel Bloggers (PTB) at a coffee shop situated near the Plaza, along with my good friend, Jaja, who I persuaded to go with me.  And so, while my friends were partying at a nearby restobar at the height of Typhoon Gorio, I decided to attend first this event and witness this once-in-a year celebration of festival queens and decided to follow them after.

standing:  Edgar and Ramil of Pinas.Muna; sitted (L-R):  Shinjin of Libotero, Tita Ludette Ruiz, Eric of Biyahilo, me and Mervin of Pinoy Adventurista
The event was a different search for a festival queen.  This was basically a showcase of festival costumes and  that it was more of a search of the best lead dancer, the one who can gracefully showcase on carrying the image of Sr. Sto. Nino .  I thought that this was the very first event held in Tacloban City, but according to some of the spectators, this event has already been held for quite a long time (2005).

The search has five contingents, which makes them all placers at the onset.  This years winners are as follows:

BITUON HAN LEYTE:  PASAKA FESTIVAL OF TANAUAN, LEYTE
Best in Dance Production and Best Festival Dancer

FIRST RUNNER-UP:  LINGGANAY FESTIVAL OF ALANG-ALANG, LEYTE
Most Authentic Costume

SECOND RUNNER-UP: INDANG FESTIVAL OF HINDANG, LEYTE

THIRD RUNNER-UP:  VIAJEDORES FESTIVAL OF LA PAZ, LEYTE

FOURTH RUNNER-UP: TULO-USA FESTIVAL OF TOLOSA, LEYTE

While Typhoon Gorio is making its presence known, definitely the stars of the festival are still shining brightly as it should be.  Truly, the Bituon Han Leyte is unstoppable even by fortuitous events such as this one.  It was truly a night to remember.

  2. Glad that your group made it. Was supposed to attend, too. But Typhoon Gorio made me a bit scared. Perhaps, next time makapunta ako. Anyway, I'm in Samar at malapit lang naman ang Samar sa Tacloban. Glad you enjoyed the festival.
