CAMBODIA: PHNOM PENH'S PIZZA AND BEER

taken during our drinking spree at Phnom Penh, Cambodia
The perfect combination - PIZZA AND BEER.  In our quest to understand the varied cultures of the world, a drinking spree should be on the list.

Phnom Penh, which is the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia is growing popularity on tourists and travelers alike for a nightlife experience.  The simple pizza and beer experience in other nations has a twist in this country.

HAPPY PIZZA
a very very happy pizza served to us

Is this a brand name? NO.  It is the Khmers way of innovating the pizza and introducing this "controversial" pizza experience in Cambodia's food industry.

As they say, this gastronomic experience of ordering for a happy, happier, very happy and very very happy pizza (in that category) would leave the diner with a happy smile and continuous laughter due to its special herbal ingredient.  Indeed, happiness can be bought here in Cambodia.

I would just leave to you the research work on why the said pizzas make everyone leave a happy smile, not just for a second but continuously.

BEER

With the self-declaration among ourselves as being beer-connoisseurs, we ordered all kinds of beer available at the restaurant where we settled for a drinking spree for tasting purposes (I suppose).  Below are my comments and ratings based on my own taste, with a rating of 5 as excellent.  You are free to dispute my ratings and I would appreciate leaving your feedback at the Comments section below.

ABC BEER:
Archipelago Brewery Company ABC Stout, Brewed and Canned by Cambodia

One thing noticeable is that it produces a lot of bubbles once poured in a glass.  This dark beer tastes bitter for me yet malty and a prominent chocolate/caramel flavor, which definitely has a strong flavor leaving an unpleasant aftertaste.  This beer made me drunk.

Rating:  2/5

ANGKOR AND ANCHOR BEER:

Almost identical and pronounced similarly that one can be deceived when ordering, just in case, you happen to like one over the other.  Good news is, both beers tastes the same and I could not even recognize one over the other, maybe I'm still not used to the taste of either.

Angkor Beer is named after the iconic Khmer Angkor temples near Siem Reap, and is said to be the most widely consumed beer in Cambodia.  It is famous with the tagline "My Country. My Beer".  Indeed, very nationalistic, which made me try it to understand their culture (a perfect excuse for me to get drunk).

Anchor Beer is also a product of Cambodia, yet, I don't know why an almost the same brand name was manufactured.  This golden-colored beer tastes like water and leaves no remarkable taste, which makes me like it that much.  While others are drunk, I can pretend to be one and witness their state of self-conscious distress.

Rating:  4/5

CAMBODIA LAGER BEER:

Many say this is the authentic Cambodian Beer, made by Cambodian although using Europe and German technology.  As expected from a lager, there is no after taste, but more watery taste than the Angkor and Anchor Beer.  Thus, not advisable if you really intend to get drunk.

Rating: 3/5

BEER LAO:

Although tasted in Cambodia, this is an imported beer actually from Laos, which is a premium authentic rice beer brewed from a unique blend of the finest European and Laotian ingredients, said to be the fusion of the best traditions of the East and West.  This is the national beer of Laos.

With a golden brown color and a perfect taste to complement with the pizza, this is the best among the ones we've ordered.  I'm just lost for words on how to describe the taste, so it's better you try it too.  (Again this is based on my opinion)

Rating:  4.5/5

SINGHA BEER:

Another imported beer from Thailand is the Singha Beer.  The taste is the  same as theABC Beer, with a bitter aftertaste and we tasted the malt flavor.

Rating: 2/5

For reference:  Define lager:  Lager (German: storage) is a type of beer that is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures. Pale lager is the most widely-consumed and commercially available style of beer in the world. The flavor of these lighter lagers is usually mild, and the producers often recommend that the beers be served refrigerated. However, the examples of lager beers produced worldwide vary greatly in flavour, colour, and composition.  (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lager)

Most of the beers tasted fall under the category of pale lagers.

Overall Dining/Drinking Spree Experience

It was a great drinking spree and dining experience in the company of good friends under the full intensity of the moonlight.

Despite what kind of beer tasted, it is the memories that matters that will forever be written in my own life history book.

Indeed, a pizza and beer experience in Phnom Penh, Cambodia is a must-try for all tourists and travelers alike.  I would be willing to do it again if given the chance.
